«Northern Mythology, Comprising the Principal Popular Traditions and Superstitions of Scandinavia, North Germany, and the Netherlands»

Written with a keen interest, this is a fascinating and slightly irritating piece of work at times. However, if you want to know more about the myths and traditional stories of Nordic culture, in particular Germany and Scandinavia, this is a good place to start.

The three volumes are a detailed books taking sources from the Prose Edda among others, such as the Greek/Roman authors, and tales traceable to Hindu and Jewish writings, which gives them a more universal connection. The books have informative notes on the major stories, which will give a better understanding to some of the the versions of these tales and the work of authors -like Tolkien.

The better known characters, Odin, Thor, Loki and Freyia feature here among many, many lesser known male and female gods, giants and beings.

There is a tone at times that the author is a bit 'anti-heathen' and pro-Christian however, he does with some honesty show how Christianity used pagan tales, dates and traditions. Otherwise very good.
