This novel about the fear and heat that plague a group of American soldiers awaiting an enemy ambush offers a realistic portrait of the conflict in Vietnam.

David Halberstam's novel of the Vietnam war. In a fast-paced novel, Halberstam draws a sharp, moving picture of the war in Vietnam and the men who fought it. There is captain Beaupre, a veteran on his way down, too old for this new war, too overweight, and tired with many more enemies besides the Viet Cong. His lieutenant, Anderson is the complete opposite, a young West Point graduate, he not only likes the Vietnamese but has learned their language & culture, he is fighting for the people. Then there are the Vietnamese that they lead and their young officer, Thuong, a proud, able but completely fatalistic man uneasy among the Americans. Besides the obivious enemy the Viet Cong, there is a greater, more terrible enemy starking these men the blazing sun, burning their thirst and testing their bodies and the fear of ambush as they walk along the canal as part of a three-pronged operation.
